What starts out as a very serious dive into the world of quantum physics becomes a spiritually enlightening book called The Self-Aware Universe, by Amit Goswami, Ph.D. with Richard E. Reed and Maggie Goswami. Though most of the reading is a combination of seemingly difficult mind games mixed with a heavy dose of quantum theory that can leave you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, a series of “eureka” moments throughout the book bring you right back up to speed and ready to experience more.
The quantum theory that is encountered in The Self-Aware Universe is almost always presented with diagrams that support the theories and observations to the best of their ability. Though it may be difficult to fully grasp ALL the concepts illustrated in this book, (if fully grasping quantum concepts is actually possible at all) I have no doubt that anyone reading it will come away with a much better “understanding” (for lack of a better word) of quantum physics and the plausible impact of quantum physics on the world’s present practices in spirituality.
It seems likely that the goal of this book, beyond merely showing off the “spooky” relationship between quantum particles and their mostly unseen effects on us and our lives, is to promote a more unified, globally conscious society capable of acting selflessly for the better of others. To “propose a new paradigm” (the world view governing scientific work at any given time) and to “show how we can develop a science that embraces the religions of the world, working in concert with them to understand the whole human condition.”
It is not common to find a book prepared to “better” your spirituality without preaching exclusivity. Amit Goswami has offered just that. In The Self-Aware Universe you will find science and religion working together as a spiritual partner instead of as a spiritual opponent. This concept seems very liberating; opening gates to other paths that otherwise seemed impassable.
“Someday,” said the Jesuit philosopher Teilhard de Chardin, “after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides, and gravity, we shall harness … the energies of love. Then for the second time in the history of the world man will have discovered fire.” We have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides, and gravity (well, almost). Can we begin harnessing the energies of love?
Can we realize our full potential – an integrated access to our quantum and classical selves? Can we let our lives become expressions of the eternal surprise of the infinite Being? We can. View Our Booklist>
