Susan Marino is the Founder and President of Angel's Gate.  Her vision was to create a place where animals, who had no place to go, because of their  special needs, would be  cared for wanted and loved.

At  its establishment thirteen years ago, Angel's Gate  cared for animals given up by humans or by shelters because of medical reasons. The animals came to Angel's Gate to live out their lives. Since then, Angel's Gate has expanded to include working with physically challenged animals.  In 2000 Angel's Gate also became a wildlife rehabilitation center.

Susan Marino is:

  • a Licensed Veterinary Technician and a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. She is also a Registered Nurse with more than thirty years experience in emergency and critical care, mental health, and the care of critically, and terminally, ill children and their families.
  • She is a specialist in many forms of holistic therapy including, animal communication, TTouch , and essential oils.
  • In 1992, she founded Angel’s Gate Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre for Animals, the first-of-its-kind residential hospice for animals.  It's non-profit status was granted in 1998.
  • Susan is a popular lecturer and educator, and received the Woman of Distinction Award for New York State in 2001 and the Founders Award from the New York City ASPCA in 2003 for her work with animals.

Susan writes for national publications, and is a frequent guest on radio and TV.  She also conducts classes and workshops in various subjects of animal care. She wrote Holistic Health Care for Animals  for the International Animal Encyclopedia.  Susan is now writing a book on Hospice Care for Animals due out next spring.

Victor LaBruna is Susan's partner.  After a career of working with mentally challenged people, he along with Susan turned to working with needy animals.  His functions range from the direct care of the animals, to habitat construction, to web master.

Angel's Gate is committed to community service and education.  They have a program to teach children about animals and reverence for all life and  a work/study program with local high schools.  Students volunteering at Angel’s Gate can earn high school credits for their time and effort.  The Long Island Head Injury Association has had volunteers at Angel’s Gate for over two years.  They find it healing for them, the animals and for these very special volunteers.  Recently they were asked by the Suffolk County Court System to participate in the juvenile delinquency program  and ASPCA offenders. Last year they began working with emotionally disturbed children in the Deer Park Schools who earn the right to do community service.
