Use Your Common Sense!

During my years at university, I was keen on collecting witty cartoon clippings, a cheap and uplifting way, to decorate the walls of my dorm room with. A favourite of mine was one in which a scientist wearing a white robe, clutching a flip chart in one hand, scratching his head with other, while looking at a very large computer with blank look on his face; trying to figure out why this sophisticated machine was not working. At the bottom right corner of the illustration, you can see that it was not plugged into the socket! To date, this cartoon still manages to bring a smile to my face whenever I think of it.

When I first moved to London, I had an urgent request for helping an elderly uncle of mine. His wife was away, he needed help packing his suitcase, and most importantly the toaster was not working. I must mention here, my uncle has always had a privileged life, roaming the world as a diplomat while everything was taken care of for him. For example, when he had retired, everyday task such as filling up the car with gasoline; were not so simple tasks for him.

So I rushed over to his place, and listened quietly as he explained how the housekeeper had taken the toaster to the repair shop several times, although the repair man kept saying the toaster had nothing wrong with it, it never worked at home.

I made my way to the kitchen, and few minutes later came back with his crispy toast. Dumbfounded, he asked how I managed to fix it. I had remembered the cartoon, of course, and explained to my uncle that the toaster had not been plugged deep enough into the socket!

When I asked him whether he had inspected it to find out why it wasn’t working at home, he surprised me by saying “No. Knowledge means responsibility- and I did not want added responsibility”. This incident and his response brought home two very important points. One is that, sometimes the answer to a difficult situation lies in using our common sense and reflecting on simple principles. The other, is that we are responsible for what we create in our lives. In other words, it is not always helpful to blame our luck, other people, or walking under a ladder for not manifesting what we truly desire in our life.

Pointers to Spiritual Common Sense

  • If what you wish for is a loving and fulfilling committed relationship, don’t start one with someone who is not available. For example someone who is already committed to another, or set your heart on someone of the opposite sexual orientation!

  • If abundance is your goal, then look after your current financial state and be aware of your spending patterns.

  • Happiness starts within your own mind. We have an average of 60,000 thoughts each day; make sure you have positive happy ones!

  • If wellbeing and loosing weight are what you wish for, then start choosing better quality, organic, food and live as a ‘fit’ person would.

Note that quote

“If you always do what you always did,
you'll always get what you always got”
