Right in the midst of the Isle of Manhattan
is a little piece of
Tibet.   It is a Himalayan gift store actually named “Tibet” tucked away at 213 West 80th Street.

The mystical quality is tangible upon entering this little jewel of a store.   On the day my friend and I visited, we were shown around by a young man named Tshering whose polite manner lead us into a whole new Tibetan world.

It was filled with mala beads, candles, pashmina shawls, garments made of silk, antique offering bowls as well as hand-painted and hand applique Thankas.  We were led through a small archway to the back of the store where we were invited to sit on cushions.  This is where we sat for hours being shown how to play singing bowls by Tshering, whose knowledge and indeed patience made it an extraordinary experience.

The store also specializes in fine handcrafted jewelry including Dzi Beads which are unique powerful charms that protect the wearer and vessel.   These beads are well known in Tibet and are believed to help individuals find greater health and success in the futureIt is not only that there is a great choice of gifts, but it is the charm of Galmu (the owner) who makes this store unique.

Tshering has since moved to Boston; however the store still radiates in its benevolent mysticism under the guidance of Gelmu  who offers a warm welcome to those who of us who wish to visit her store.
