Use Your Common Sense!
During my years at university, I was keen on collecting witty cartoon clippings, a cheap and uplifting way, to decorate the walls of my dorm room with. A favourite of mine was one in which a scientist wearing a white robe, clutching a flip chart in one hand, scratching his head with other, while looking at a very large computer with blank look on his face; trying to figure out why this sophisticated machine was not working. At the bottom right corner of the illustration, you can see that it was not plugged into the socket! To date, this cartoon still manages to bring a smile to my face whenever I think of it.
When I first moved to London, I had an urgent request for helping an elderly uncle of mine. His wife was away, he needed help packing his suitcase, and most importantly the toaster was not working. When I asked him whether he had inspected it to find out why it wasn’t working at home, he surprised me by saying “No. Knowledge means responsibility- and I did not want added responsibility”. This incident and his response brought home two very important points. One is that, sometimes the answer to a difficult situation lies in using our common sense and reflecting on simple principles. The other, is that we are responsible for what we create in our lives. In other words, it is not always helpful to blame our luck, other people, or walking under a ladder for not manifesting what we truly desire in our life.
