Circlesongs: Bobby McFerrin at Omega August 18-25

Bobby McFerrin will be in residence at Omega Institute for a week, from August 18-25, offering 2, 5, and 7 day music workshops. Mr. McFerrin is an American jazz vocalist and conductor. A ten-time Grammy Award winner, he is known for his unique vocal techniques. From the website we read:  Enter the circle for a life-changing adventure. Breathe. Sing. Open your heart. Listen to the music all around you. The Circlesongs workshop is an immersion in sound, creativity, and community. Accessible to beginners, challenging for professional musicians, the program invites participants to play, sing, invent, and imagine—in music and in life.

“Music is powerful. It’s a spiritual art. It goes right to the heart and to the mind. Artists have a huge responsibility to feed the soul good things, positive things.”
—Bobby McFerrin

Circlesongs are spontaneously composed a cappella pieces that use anything we’ve ever heard and everything we can do with our voices: call and response, global rhythms, soaring melodies, lush harmonies, funny noises, invented language, silence, prayers, and laughter. Together, we create a profound and unforgettable experience of connection and joy.

The program features large group sessions, smaller groups guided by individual faculty, and seminars. Electives include body percussion, beatboxing, looping, Balkan and a cappella choirs, freestyle language improvisation, and vocal technique. Circlesongs develop fundamental musicianship and traditional skills prized for ensemble singing—blend, balance, tuning, and sensitivity. The program is transforming for singers, teachers, group facilitators, instrumentalists, conductors, activists—for anyone. Make music, create community, build trust, nurture creativity, and embrace life to the fullest. Every song, every voice has a place in the circle.
