Meta-Physician on Call for Better Health: Metaphysics and Medicine for Mind, Body, and Spirit By Dr. Steven E. Hodes
“In earlier times, doctors were often as concerned with the spirit and the mind as with the body. Steven Hodes is a very modern doctor who has returned to that tradition. He explores so much that modern science and medicine dismisses or ignores: spirituality, religion, every aspect of dying, death, and possible afterlives, the explainable, and the mysterious. Read this fascinating book and follow Hodes on his journey; re ad it with an open mind and begin your own journey.”- Andrew Nagorski, Newsweek International senior editor & author of The Greatest Battle
Many of us wish we had a doctor like Steve E. Hodes, M.D., and now we can all benefit from his wise “prescriptions” with the publication of his first book, Meta-Physician on Call for Better Health: Metaphysics and Medicine for Mind, Body, and Spirit (Praeger Publishers, November 2007).
His message is that people must learn to take charge of their own healing and well-being. He offers many ways to explore spiritual growth for the purpose of a healthy mind, body and soul.
“Dr. Steve” was initially trained in traditional, high-caliber medical programs that led him through graduation from the Albert Einstein Medical School and to a fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. But many years later, he saw something vital missing in his approach to healthcare. “I was trained as a physician, not a healer…taught to view the patient as a machine suffering from some mechanical failure. My purpose was to be the best diagnostician possible,” he explains. Then events occurred that opened the eyes of this now-veteran physician to deep insights about the mind-body-spirit connection.
That “awakening” moved him to a metaphysical view of health–a view more spiritual than religious but still firmly grounded in science. Embracing his role as a metaphysician, he also began to see himself as “meta-physician,” a doctor transformed (meta) by this new awareness.
In Meta-Physician on Call for Better Health: Metaphysics and Medicine for Mind, Body, and Spirit (Praeger, November 30, 2007),hedetails his experience discovering and incorporating metaphysics into his traditional practice of medicine, explores the many ways spirituality affects our well being, and shows how people can learn to take charge of their own healing process.
He points to profound, yet simple, observations and beliefs that affect our perception of the nature of reality (metaphysics) which, in turn, can affect our well-being in all senses (body, mind, and spirit).
The book opens with “From Physician to Meta-Physician: My Personal Journey from Physician to Healer,” the engaging tale of his own spiritual awakening, in which he shares his initial introduction to metaphysics through Kabbalah, mediums and deep studies into the connection between spirituality and science.
In a series of easy to follow chapters that represent the essence of his prescriptions for living, he imparts snippets of wisdom on a wide range of topics that run the gamut from explaining metaphysics and healing, to sharing his controversial view that death is not the big deal we make it into in this culture. Chapters include: Metaphysics, What Does It Mean?, Solving Life’s Mysteries, Anatomy of a Belief. Science and Spirituality, Metaphysics of the Unexplained, Death as a Transition Not a Tragedy, Suffering Is Not Punishment, Spiritually Correct Forgiveness, and Healing–What Does It Really Mean?
He devotes a section of the book to the idea of “Testing Credibility–How Do You Know What’s Real?” There he points out how to find your own evidence for a Spiritual Dimension to Reality (SDR) and how tapping into this insight can help us all heal. In this surprising and compelling part of the book, he shares a wide selection of first person stories about ghosts, guidance from “the other side” and other extraordinary phenomenon, all collected from credible sources such as patients, other physicians and nurses, some times in the course of his hospital rounds (which he calls “Making Metaphysical Rounds”) or during the day-to-day practice of medicine.
The book wraps up with a self help section, “Twenty-seven Ways to Embrace Your Inner Metaphysician,’ which gives readers the how to insight on how to apply and utilize these metaphysical and spiritual principles in their lives.
His most powerful message, throughout, is that we all can and should take responsibility for our own well-being on all levels. As the author puts it: “This book is designed to inspire us to ask our own questions, and gather our own evidence to enhance all areas of our lives and well-being, and so find healing and peace.”
