Billions Rising: Empowering Self-Reliance
Check out this wonderful organization, Billions Rising, at www.billionsrising.com . This organization is “dedicated to the idea that this abundant world has everything we need for each person on the planet to live in prosperity. We believe that poverty will be eliminated through education, action, innovation and collaboration. Each of us can make choices to become self-reliant ourselves and then reach out to help others do the same.” Billions Rising is all about giving a hand-up, not a hand-out, and empowering self-reliance.
Check out some of their recent success stories:
Sixteen years ago, Mark Horvath was homeless and living on Hollywood Boulevard. But fueled by what he calls his “sense of purpose” he was able to move from survival to creative expression. Today he has his own television network , where he documents the lives of homeless people. His focus is on raising awareness and helping to streamline the journey from homelessness to employment and self-reliance.
Just before the market crash of 2008, best-selling author Jen Kushell was scheduled to appear on CNN as a young and successful entrepreneur. She had a million dollar payroll and a 9,000 square foot office space for Young Success Network . She lost most of it. But over the next few years, she once again showed why US News and World Report called her a “guru” of her generation. She rebuilt her network, working with thousands of young people around the world, in 110 countries, giving them the tools they needed to find their own entrepreneurial passion and launch careers.
Eddy is a young Bolivian man. He was one of eight children; but only three of those children survived. The other five died in early childhood because the parents did not have sufficient food for them. Eddy’s personal despair drove his desire to be lifted up from poverty. He recently completed his Ph.D. in nutrition .
Each of these people took action to become self-reliant, and found ways to rely on their own capabilities and resources. Here at Billions Rising, our mission is to document and highlight efforts such as these and to promote the idea that self-reliance is the key to eliminating poverty. The world-wide self-reliance movement we are finding is an encouraging departure from the model of passive aid donations from past decades.
