The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, as it is known, has restarted this week in Switzerland after a two year hiatus for rebuilding and refitting. The facility conducts particle beam experiments and is famous for identifying the Higgs Boson particle, or “God particle,” in 2012, thought to be the source of the universe’s creation… some of the things that the Large Hadron Collider will be looking for during its next round of experiments will be more information about the Higgs boson and how it works. Scientists at CERN will also be trying to create the particles that are hypothesized to make up dark matter as well as evidence for the first supersymmetric particle .

David Eagleman is an American neuroscientist and writer at Baylor College of Medicine, where he directs the Laboratory for Perception and Action and the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law. Nature magazine has reported that, in what is being called a major scientific break-through, researchers at the Scripps Research Institute say they created the first microbes containing artificial DNA. It could not only alter the basic genetic code, the fundamental building blocks of life, but also lead to new drugs and treatments. “Throughout history, there have been four building blocks in DNA in every organism on earth,” CBS News medical contributor Dr. David Agus said. “… And for the first time, they made two new letters – so four letters to six letters to actually make DNA.” He said this changes “everything that’s possible.”
