The Element of Uncertainty

Many years ago I used to make a living reading the Tarot cards, and teaching others how to do it. Coming from a long line of psychics, I grew up watching my Mum give readings from tea leaves and cards as well. Early on my mother taught me that people want to hear about their love life, their houses, their children and their careers. She also said, “People want to hear certainty and specific outcomes.” I found that while I enjoyed helping people, I felt a responsibility to not misguide them or be so directive that they ignored other possibilities.

I, too, started out doing the same sort of readings as my mother. Over time, I progressed to a different analysis of the cards. I decided that we weren’t doing the client any favors if we were telling them how to live their lives. It was as if by making predictions, we were disempowering them by taking away their ability to choose what would happen. What if there were numerous possibilities, many of them good, and the client needed to make her own choice about what she wanted? My mother would see several outcomes in the cards, and encourage the person to focus and make an effort to bring about a satisfactory choice. I, on the other hand, would involve the client in interpreting the cards in a way that engaged their conscious, their subconscious, and their higher self to provide their own answers.

This led directly to teaching my clients how to read their own cards and empower themselves. As they learned the meaning of each card and how to interpret on the material and spiritual level, they grew more confident, both in their predictions and in how to consciously co-create the future that they desired. In this way, they were responsible for their own lives, their own choices and their own power.
