October 2004 Merlian Newsletter
Dear Readers,
The month of October derived its name from the Latin term octo meaning eight, as it was the eighth month of the year under the ancient Roman calendar. However, we know this month to be like no other as the first glimpse of brilliant rusts, golds and reds overtake summer’s greenery.
It is also the season when the mystical veil separating this world from that of the dead, is at it’s thinnest. The ancient pagan holiday associated with this time of year has been known throughout the centuries at Samhain, later evolving into All Hallow’s Eve.
Born from ancient Celtic ritual and belief, Samhain is the celebration of death. Within the world of magic, particularly Wicca and other ancient shamanic religions, Samhain rituals continue today with such traditions as “Dumb Suppers” where place settings are prepared for the dead, and “Samhain Circles” which are held by the living who wish to communicate with those already crossed over to the other side of the veil.
To honor the season, MerlianNews has added a new category which we hope you will find of interest, celebrating the history and fascination of the spirit world, entitled, Mediumship.
