After the DARK Act: Companies to Label GMO Products

Last week, grassroots activists nationwide rallied to stop the anti-labeling DARK Act from moving forward in the Senate. Now, with Vermont’s first-in-the-nation labeling law set to take effect this summer, a few company executives have decided that it would be easier to label GMOs than to continue to fight the pro-labeling movement.

Kellogg’s, General Mills, and Mars just announced that as soon as mid-April they will begin labeling their GMO products. This is a huge step forward and it is to be hoped that other major food companies will follow suit. However, as we read on www.fooddemocracynow.org,

“Unfortunately this fight is far from over. The fact is we’ve stopped them, but they’re desperate to get a compromise that will only allow voluntary labeling…”

64 other countries around the world already legislate labeling GM products. The label may be as simple as “GM Product” or “Produced with Genetic Engineering.”

Vermont will be the first of several states with pending pro-label legislation to enact it into law. The Roberts bill, or DARK Act, as it came to be known, is an effort to bar state legislation by passing a federal statute that would make it illegal for individual states to require labels.

The Dangers of Artificial Food Dyes

Dr. Oz recently ran a feature about the dangers of food dye, especially for children, on his popular TV show. This is a topic that has received a lot of attention over the years as the prevalence of children diagnosed with ADHD and ADD has spiked dramatically. While the main focus has been on eliminating sugar from the diets of these children, there is solid evidence that consumption of artificial food colors contributes to attention and behavioral problems, too.

The knotweed, or smartweed, or buckwheat family — the Polygonaceae — is an interesting family that is probably represented by one or more species right outside your door, no matter where you live. Most knotweeds have terminal (at the upper end) clusters of conspicuous droopy or upright pink or white flowers that are so tightly closed they look like knots. Wild buckwheat and cultivated buckwheat (which is also known as kasha) have flowers like this.

Growing a Victory Garden with Dr. Mercola

Anyone Can Grow Food! The late Jerry Brunetti discussed Victory Gardens during World War I and II in his last book, The Farm as Ecosystem. The gardens were advertised as a way for patriots to make a difference on the home-front. At that time, the majority of the produce grown in the US was grown right in people’s backyards, and I firmly believe we need to revert to growing our own food .
