Scotland Bans GM Crops

Scotland is the latest country to ban growing GM crops within its borders. In a move designed to protect Scotland’s clean, green pastures, the government announced two days ago that it was banning new cultivation of genetically modified foodstuffs.

The Rural Cabinet Secretary, Richard Lochhead, said:

“ Scotland is known around the world for our beautiful natural environment — and banning growing genetically modified crops will protect and further enhance our clean, green status. There is no evidence of significant demand for GM products by Scottish consumers and I am concerned that allowing GM crops to be grown in Scotland would damage our clean and green brand, thereby gambling with the future of our £14 billion food and drink sector. Scottish food and drink is valued at home and abroad for its natural, high quality which often attracts a premium price, and I have heard directly from food and drink producers in other countries that are ditching GM because of a consumer backlash.”

Under EU rules, GM crops must be formally authorized before they can be cultivated in the EU geographical area. The amendment to Directive 2001/18/EC came into force earlier this year and allows Member States and Devolved Administrations to restrict or ban the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) within their territory.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s campaign “Just Label It” to overturn the DARK Act

Gwyneth Paltrow has joined a growing list of celebrities and politicians urging Americans to act quickly to prevent passage of the DARK Act — “Denying American’s Right to Know” whether their food contains genetically modified products. The need to act is urgent: the bill has already passed the House and is due to come before the Senate on August 5th. Passage of this bill would overturn mandatory GMO labeling in the three states that already have it, and prevent new measures from being taken across the country.

Why You Dont Need Dairy for Calcium

There’s been a lot of controversy over the last several years about calcium in our diet, especially about the amount required to prevent bone loss and whether calcium supplements are necessary. Calcium levels become especially critical when you take away meat and dairy. There is a myth prevalent that you must have milk in your diet in order to fulfill your body’s requirements. Addressing this myth, Rosane Oliveira, DVM, PhD, writes, “The subject of calcium is a hotly debated one. One of the biggest controversies is whether or not we can really get enough calcium following a whole-food, plant-based diet that excludes dairy.” From www.forksoverknives.com

Act Now to Make GMO Labeling a Reality by Dr. Mercola

| by Dr. Mercola

Currently, Americans are standing at a crossroads: one way leads to certain labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods across the country; the other will lead toward the elimination of that possibility. If you’ve never taken action on this issue before, I urge you to do so now. We need every single American who cares about this issue to make their opinion known very clearly to their federal representatives. The burden should not be placed on the traditional salmon fishermen to get their nature-provided fish certified as GMO-free…

Buying Good Olive Oil – Avoid the Scams

| by Staff

From www.healthimpactnews.com , John P. Thomas writes: Do you trust the label on your Extra Virgin Olive Oil? Numerous scandals have been uncovered over the last twenty years which have revealed that many extra virgin olive oils being sold in the United States do not meet the high standard for this product. Many have been adulterated with lower grade olive oils or with nut and seed oils. Others simply have serious flavor and aroma defects, which should prevent them from being called “extra virgin.” The controversy continues to this day….

Stop Passage of the “DARK Act!”

Two weeks ago Reuters reported that a Republican congressman from Kansas introduced legislation on Wednesday that would nullify efforts in multiple states to require labeling of genetically modified foods. The bill, dubbed the “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act” was drafted by U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo from Kansas, and is aimed at overriding bills in roughly two dozen states that would require foods made with genetically engineered crops to be labeled as such. The bill specifically prohibits any mandatory labeling of foods developed using bioengineering. Critics have dubbed it the “DARK Act.” Dark stands for Deny Americans the Right to Know.
