Going Beyond Our Genes: Bruce Lipton and the Study of Epigenetics
I first became interested in Bruce Lipton when I saw one of his broadcasts on Conscious TV. I found his lectures on Biology and Belief, and the power we have to affect our genes and DNA, to be absolutely fascinating. The idea that we can “switch off” a gene, or the predispostion to a disease fits with everything I know about the mind-body connection, and everything I believe to be true about the importance of mind over matter.
Dr. Lipton’s research examines ” the molecular mechanisms by which cells process information, have revealed that genes do not in fact control our behavior, instead, genes are turned on and off by influences outside the cell. These influences include our perceptions and beliefs. He shows that our beliefs, true or false, positive or negative, affect genetic activity and actually alter our genetic code.” from www.brucelipton.com.
In his YouTube video, “The Science of Human Empowerment,” Lipton says, “The old medical model states that you are a bio-mechanical machine controlled by your genes… this means that you are a victim, because there is nothing that you can do. The real fact is that genes do not control biology!”
Over the years, some well known scientists have proven Dr. Lipton is correct. The latest research indicates that everything from the food you eat, the amount you exercise, and the degree of stress in your life are critically important determinants as to whether your genes are switched on or off. I find this idea to be a very hopeful message that releases us from the prison of biology and empowers us to regulate our own health. For many who have been afraid of the cancers or illnesses their ancestors may have passed on, this idea can be especially liberating and, if nothing else, generate the sort of positive attitude that we know leads to improved health.
