The Remote Area Medical® (RAM) Volunteer Corps: Founder Stan Brock

60 Minutes, Sunday evening, March 2nd, 2008. Below is the story of how it got started by an amazing man named Stan Brock.

The vision for Remote Area Medical® developed in the Amazon rain forest where founder Stan Brock spent 15 years with the Wapishana Indians. He lived with the pain and suffering created by isolation from medical care. He witnessed the near devastation of whole tribes by what would have been simple or minor illnesses to more advanced cultures. When he left South America to co-star in the television series, “Wild Kingdom, ” he vowed to find a way to deliver basic medical aid to people in the world’s inaccessible regions.

The organization was founded in 1985 and years of research and planning yielded a vast, carefully developed network of men and women who have come together to make RAM a highly mobile, remarkably efficient relief force. Volunteers are doctors, nurses, technicians, and veterinarians who go on expeditions at their own expense and treat hundreds of patients a day under some of the worst conditions.

Volunteers have provided general medical, surgical, eye, dental, and veterinary care to tens of thousands of people and animals, with 60% of the expeditions serving rural America. There are plans for expansion of US expeditions, an airborne medical treatment center, a permanent clinic site in Guyana, and a program start-up in Africa.

On March 3 2004, the Senate at the state capitol in Nashville Tennessee passed a resolution honoring Remote Area Medical® for “Compassion and Dedication to providing medical care.”

Next Expedition

The next expedition will be at the Oakdale School in Oakdale, TN (Morgan County) on March 29-30, 2008. Directions and information can be foundhere.

Past Expedition

At the expedition on Jan. 5-6 in Knoxville TN, RAM brought 1343 free services to people. There were 504 eyeglasses provided, 1066 teeth extracted and 567 fillings done. There were 276 volunteers. The total value of free care was $235,497.00.

Few medical relief charities can compare with RAM in the scope of services offered, frequency of teams dispatched, and the variety of locations served. And the out-of-pocket cost to RAM averages less than $2 per patient!

“The Past is in Front of You” by Stephen Thomson

| by Stephen Thomson

We have become a culture of people who try to shun the past. It has become an active, obsessive campaign. And it is true, there is value in the idea of what’s in the past, should remain in the past. This is certainly true of the memory of any experience that holds our lives in place and prevents us from growing stronger and expanding as spiritual beings. However, we do continue to walk each day with conscious and unconscious memories being the backdrop to our lives. Not only are they a part of our thought-track, but emotional memory is translated into energetic forms that become lodged in our cells and various parts of our body.

A Talk With Drs. Janae and Barry Weinhold, authors of The Flight from Intimacy and Breaking Free of the Co-Dependency Trap

| by Monique Muhlenkamp, New World Library

Co-dependency was first associated with addictions and alcoholism. Now it is recognized as a cultural issue that is interfering with our ability to address global issues such as climate change, peak oil, economic and political instability and the over-consumption of the earth’s resources. Co-dependency makes people afraid of changing their beliefs about who they are, about how the world operates and encourages them to hang on to their “things” as a way of feeling safe during times of crisis or rapid change.

The 8th Chakra and Heart-Centred Soul Healing by Dr. Jude Currivan

| by Dr. Jude Currivan

Science and spiritual wisdom is becoming more and more entwined as the growing awareness of a wholly interconnected, conscious and holographic universe has radical implications for each of us. It reveals that in the Cosmos, consciousness is primary to the creation of the physical world and that these momentous times are the wave front of a global shift of consciousness. One of the most profound harbingers of this Shift is that we are individually and collectively able to directly access newly available cosmic energies that transcend our personal sense of self. Our liberated perception assists us in healing and releasing old patterns and limitations. And as we free ourselves, we are empowered to consciously co-create a new way of being in the world.

The Divine Matrix — Bridging Time, Space, Miracles, and Belief by Gregg Braden

| by Cheryl Shainmark

I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a change — in their own lives, their relationships, their job, or in the larger world around them. Whether your focus is finding the love of your life, stopping destructive patterns, or ending war and violence in our world, this book has something to offer. Braden cites an interesting statistic in his book — that less than one percent of any population (actually the square root of one percent) can change the reality around them, and that for the entire world to change all that is required is for 8,000 to focus on it. I find that an amazingly hopeful figure, and while I’d like to think that many of that 8,000 are already on the job and improving our world, I would be satisfied if I thought the rest were coming as a result of reading The Divine Matrix.

Seeking Meaning and Credibility in the Extraordinary Experiences of Others–The Fuel for the Metaphysical Journey by Dr. Steven E. Hodes

| by Steven E. Hodes, M.D.

This experience, and these stories, have changed my life. To come to this powerful awareness can dispel much of the fear of death and loneliness that afflicts many of us. No longer afraid of death, we can embrace life. No longer plagued by feelings of loneliness and worthlessness, we can be comforted by the knowledge that we are never alone. We find ourselves more secure, content and whole. This is an essential component to any notion of healing.
