The Dangers of 5G: The Price for Speed May Be Too High

We all love our technology – texting, streaming movies, playing our music – and we’ve grown addicted to high speeds and smooth transmission. In response to this, telecommunications companies worldwide, with the support of governments, are poised within the next two years to roll out the fifth-generation wireless network (5G). What is less known is what this leap may mean for our bodies and our environment. As Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal (video) highlighted in a recent Congressional hearing, there has been ZERO research from the industry or the FDA.  Worldwide, there have been some limited studies from concerned scientists, and the results are deeply troubling.

Currently, 4G utilizes frequencies in the 700 mhz – 2500 mhz range, but may go as high as 6GHz. 5G exposes all biological life to constantly pulsed signals in the 28GHz to 100GHz range. The general public has NEVER been exposed to such high frequencies for long periods of time, and doctors and environmentalists are sounding the alarm. Scientists from 42 countries are warning their governments about the emerging health problems associated with wireless radiation, and Canadian doctors and scientists have added their concerns about the risk to humans. “The most prevalent symptoms include headache, fatigue, decreased ability to concentrate, tinnitus, irritability and insomnia,” said Dr. Riina Bray, an environmental health consultant. “Impacts on the heart and nervous system are also of concern.”

If you think that this won’t affect you – that you don’t live near a cell tower, or you don’t use your cell phone or laptop very much – think again. In addition to satellite transmissions, 5G technology is based on smaller towers, which are faster to build (and easier to push through local NIMBY town boards), and rely on additional transmitters spaced small distances apart – around every third telephone pole – throughout the country. If this happens, then everywhere you go, inside and out, you will be involuntarily bombarded with these microwave signals. Communities in several states, including Mill Valley, California, Woodstock, New York, Wisconsin and others, are already calling for a halt to the 5G roll out, citing the health risks. “5G technology requires small cell antennae that have been proven harmful to our health,” said Elaine Unger, lead organizer for Wisconsin for Safe Technology. “Studies show clear evidence of cancer and DNA damage from 2G and 3G technology. Other effects are reproductive health, like infertility and miscarriage. Migraines, chronic fatigue. The technology requires small cell antennae which emit radio frequency radiation to be placed two to 10 homes apart for 5G technology to work.”

Unfortunately, the effects are not just on humans. According to Physicians for Safe Technology, “Biologists have noted that wildlife are susceptible to harm from man made ambient electromagnetic fields. Researchers are now attributing RFR from cellular telecommunications to be a contributing cause of bee “colony collapse disorder”, insect disappearance, the decline in house sparrows in London, as well as the steady deterioration of the worlds bird population with now than 40% of bird species under critical threat. Adverse responses from radio frequency radiation that have been identified include abnormal behavior, developmental abnormalities, diminished reproduction and increased mortality. Birds, bees, turtles, dolphins, salamanders, salmon, amphibians and other animals use the earth’s weak magnetic field and their own internal magneto-receptors to navigate. Insects, the base of the food chain, appear particularly susceptible to radio frequency radiation, especially 5G millimeter wavelengths which are the size of the insect and create a damaging resonance effect. Added to this, numerous studies on plants, bacteria and fungi have shown adverse or enhanced growth patterns with exposure to varying levels of microwave radiation. In Colorado, Aspen trees have been on the decline and experiments have pointed to radiation from cell towers causing poor growth and smaller leaves.”

It’s not just Americans that are concerned about the effects of 5G. The Appeal is a worldwide online forum for those who are concerned about this untested technology. They have 99,192 signatures from  187 countries as of June 5, 2019. From their website we read, “We the undersigned scientists, doctors, environmental organizations and citizens from (__) countries, urgently call for a halt to the deployment of the 5G (fifth generation) wireless network, including 5G from space satellites. 5G will massively increase exposure to radio frequency (RF) radiation on top of the 2G, 3G and 4G networks for telecommunications already in place. RF radiation has been proven harmful for humans and the environment. The deployment of 5G constitutes an experiment on humanity and the environment that is defined as a crime under international law.”

Let’s face it, most of us want faster, better telecommunication, so we aren’t opposed to technological advancement. However, it doesn’t need to be through radio frequency. We can support safe technology like running underground fiber optic lines all the way to the premises, which is safer, faster, and less susceptible to weather and environmental damage. At a minimum, it seems clear from the limited research available that we need to put the 5G roll out on hold until we fully understand the consequences of our push for speed.
