Beautiful Croton-On-Hudson: People and Places Worth Visiting

Croton-on-Hudson is a lovely village in Westchester County, New York, located about an hour north of New York City. The village was incorporated in 1898, and from the 1910s to the 1960s, Croton was a popular location for the summer homes of American communists, socialists and other radicals and many important artists and writers. It is now well known as the home of the Clearwater Festival , the annual music, art, and environmental festival started by Pete Seeger almost 40 years ago.

Croton has beautiful parks where you can walk or bike along the Hudson river. Every year the central business district closes off the main street to cars and hosts an annual event called the Summerfest, which features music, American food, local fund raisers, traveling, and local artists.

Deborah Tomasello specializes in designing, knitting or sewing a variety of fine handcrafted goods. She says, “Some people see a beautiful sunset, and they photograph it. Others paint it. I knit it. Yarn, fiber and fabrics are real—tactile. When I knit it or sew it, I make that sunset mine.” In addition to knitting hats, fingerless “texting” gloves, sweaters and more, Deborah weaves and creates all-occasion greeting cards. Mindful of the state of the planet, she frequently uses recycled and repurposed papers, fibers and fabrics. Deborah weaves with string and jute as well as wool, and designs and sews tote bags reusing burlap sacks.
