Activated Charcoal: An Old Fashioned Cure-All

Used for millennia in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, activated charcoal is gaining attention in the Western world now, thanks to its potent  detoxification properties and health benefits. Health advocates such as Dr. Mercola list it among their go to remedies. Activated charcoal works by trapping toxins and chemicals in its millions of tiny pores. The porous surface of activated charcoal has a negative electric charge that causes positive charged toxins and gas to bond with it. The nooks and crannies in activated charcoal are created through a heating process. One of the most popular activated charcoal uses is for the safe and effective treatment of poisoning and drug overdoses. It’s used in emergency trauma centers across the world.

Other uses include:

  • Digestion/Bloating/Gas
  • Teeth Whitening/Dental Infections
  • Alcohol Poisoning/Hangover
  • Vomiting
  • Skin ulcerations, sores, burns
  • Spider bites
  • Poisoning/Ingested Toxins
  • Mold Removal
  • Water Filtration

John Dinsley (video), the author of CharcoalRemedies.com The Complete Handbook of Medicinal Charcoal & Its Applications, has found it be effective for even more issues including fighting kidney and liver disease, gall stones, lowering cholesterol, reversing gout and treating malaria. Historically, the Amish have used a paste of charcoal to treat acne, exema, burns, poison ivy and poison oak, and to remove embedded splinters from the skin.

As with any medicine, herbal remedy, or supplement, readers should research and consult their physicians before using activated charcoal. Sites such as WebMd warn that possible side effects and interactions include adsorption of good minerals and molecules, such as medicine, along with the bad.

Dandelions May Help Beat Cancer

Dandelion, both leaves and roots, whether grown wild or cultivated, is full of medicinal benefits. The greens can be chopped into salad, cooked like spinach, or added to juicing, while the root form can be used to make an infusion/tea or extract. Pamela Ovadje, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Windsor, has done extensive work in investigating the anti-cancer properties of dandelions and other natural extracts. She found that an extract of dandelions can cause apoptosis, or cell death, among cancerous cells while not harming the healthy ones.

9 Health Benefits of Thyme

Thyme, an herb native to the Mediterranean but now grown over most of the world, has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, an antidote for the Plague and in embalming preparations. And while it’s unlikely that thyme stopped the plague, modern research has proven that thyme does indeed combat infection. One study from 2010 suggests that thymol, the active ingredient in thyme, can reduce bacterial resistance to common drugs, including penicillin. A member of the mint family, thyme has long been used in Mediterranean cuisines for its sharp minty flavor as well as its medicinal properties.

Using Saffron to Boost or Restore Eye Health

Saffron, the world’s most expensive spice, has long been highly regarded for its distinctive golden color and subtle flavor. But did you know that it is also considered a potent healing agent? FDA Targets Homeopathic Remedies

In December the Food and Drug Administration announced a major change in policy regarding homeopathic remedies. As reported in The Washington Post, CNN, and NPR, the FDA has proposed a more aggressive approach to testing and possibly banning, homeopathic drugs that it considers dangerous, especially those intended for children and others with serious illnesses, such as cancer. Critics of the policy change note that while most natural remedies are known for having fewer side effects than many mass market drugs, this could open the door to eliminating otherwise effective “non-pharma” remedies.

Avoid Chronic Inflammation With The Right Diet

| by Merlian News

There’s been a lot of news the last few years about chronic inflammation and its debilitating effects on the body, but researchers are still unclear about the causes. Under normal circumstances, the body is supposed to “inflame” a little to mount an immune response and counteract infection — it’s when the body stays in that state that problems occur. As reported at www.easyhealthoptions.com : “ Like every system in the body, the key is balance – because inflammation does have a serious downside. It’s a slippery slope: A normal healing response can progress to an ongoing inflammatory process that spreads throughout the body under the right (or rather, wrong) conditions…”

Dr Mercola: Using Aloe Juice to Treat Heartburn

| by Merlian News

In a recent article, Dr. Mercola writes, “An estimated 15 to 20 million Americans use acid inhibiting drugs to treat heartburn. Indeed, PPIs are among the most widely prescribed drugs today, with annual sales of about $14 billion. This despite the fact that they were never intended to treat heartburn in the first place. Research clearly shows that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are severely overprescribed and misused, and do far more harm than good in the long run.”
